The Punk and the Godfather

Late at night, there is an unholy racket sounding from the garage. From a distance, it seems to just be an engine revving. Not a particularly powerful engine, mind you. A gearhead might pinpoint it at just under 200cc.

Will was wandering the grounds at night -- the things you do when sleep isn't an issue and your roommate is an alien invader! -- when she heard the strange sounds coming from the garage.

"Who on earth is racing at this time of night?"

She headed in that general direction.

The revving continues unabated.

Curiously, none of the lights are on in the garage. It's definitely coming from inside, though.

Will popped the door and stuck her head in.

"Hello? Natalie? Anyone up?"

As soon as the door opens, the revving stops. Once Will flicks the lights on, he sees something out of place. A bright red vintage Vespa, oddly positioned to be directly across from the old motorcycle Tereza had been working on.

Or at least the person they'd thought was Tereza.

"...OK, engines don't rev themselves," Will said, cautiously approaching the two motorbikes.

Neither of them are moving, but there is a faint creaking of heat contraction from the Vespa and a whiff of petrol exhaust.

Will carefully approached the Vespa, and put her hand on the engine compartment-- to see how warm it was.

It's definitely warm, nearly hot to the touch.

Will hears a soft crackle from the scooter's single radio speaker.

Raising an eyebrow, Will reached over and turned the radio up. "'Ello ello?"

As Will turns up the volume a bit, there's a song that perhaps she recognizes.

"Your fingernails go dragging down the wall
Be careful darling you might fall
I want you
I woke up and one of us was crying
I want you
You said 'Young man I do believe you're dying'
I want you
If you need a second opinion as you seem to do these days
I want you
You can look in my eyes and you can count the ways
I want you
Did you mean to tell me but seem to forget
I want you."

Will frowned. "Nasty little song, that," she muttered, switching off the radio.

Looking at the scooter, it's obvious that it's someone's pride and joy. It might be a bit old, but it's been well cared for. In fact, other than a questionable taste in radio stations, there seems to be nothing wrong with it.

Then again, there is a sizable skidmark on the garage floor leading from a presently unoccupied area.

Curious, Will started wheeling the scooter back where the skidmark came from -- something was afoot here!

The garage has areas marked out with paint on the floor, to keep everyone's pet projects and vehicles separate. The skidmark leads back to spot number 9, which the clipboard hung on the wall indicates is currently occupied by "Emilie."

"Mmmhmm. I see."

Will walked the Vespa back into it's parking spot, aligning it properly. "Very strange," she said, looking for anything else out of the ordinary.

It seems... reluctant, somehow. Almost... dragging its wheels?

But that's anthropomorphizing an inanimate object, surely.

Will does anthropomorphize inanimate objects. It's kind of her schtick.

Then again, her schtick was also "things belong in their proper place". That was an important part of the schtick! And so, she fought with the scooter, dragging it back towards it's place.

"Busted wheel assembly, perhaps? Someone better take that apart and check it out."

Will bent down, shifting her hands into a screwdriver.

"Unlike Tereza, you see, I go through with my promises", she joked, looking to pry off some of the bodywork around the wheels to figure out what was jamming them.

As Will kneels down and tries to pry back some parts, she gets a nasty surprise.

Specifically the engine suddenly starting and the scooter lurching towards her.

It's threatening. In a candy-apple red way.

"Woah!" Will cried, lunging to her right and attempting to avoid the candy-red doom.

Just a lurch. It doesn't get far. Will gets clear of it easily, but it gets the message across.

"Well, now, you're not exactly what you say you are on the tin, are you?" she said, standing up and dusting herself off.

"A little wild Bronco, huh?"

The radio crackles on again.

"Nice girls, not one with a defect
Cellophane shrink-wrapped, so correct
Red dogs under illegal x
She looks so good that he gets down and begs..."

Will misinterpreted.

"Oh, if you think I'm going to get down and beg, you've got another thing coming."

And with that she ran at the scooter, planning to dramatically jump onto it's seat.

It's a skillful bit of gymnastics! Will lands squarely on the seat.

Then, the scooter takes off at full pelt, doing a wild loop inside the garage.

Aha! My suspicions were correct; something is strange and unusual about this moped; some sort of rudimentary mechanical intelligence is at place here. This is an unusual and noteworthy development, and worth keeping record thereof.

"Wooooah!"

Will put her hands on the handlebars, trying to wrest some control over the moped from the beast itself. "Mopeds are driven, they do not drive themselves!"

Will is able to wrest some of the steering away from the scooter's control, but it seems to be fighting her. At present, it looks to be gunning it for the open garage door.

You: Let's go for the brakes and stop this before it gets out into dangerous territory.

Will, an intellectual: When you're trying to break a wild animal, you let it tire itself out, first.

With that in mind, Will tried to gun the engine, pointing it towards that garage door and clinging on for dear life, her legs clamping hard on the bike to keep from getting thrown off.

And so it is that a scooter came zipping out of the garage making as thunderous a noise as just shy of 200ccs can muster.

Soon after emerging, Will can feel the Vespa's front wheel starting to pull up. Almost as if it's trying to pop a wheelie.

Will pulled back on the handlebars to facilitate said awesome wheelie, wrapping her fingers around and around the handlebar multiple times to prevent possibly being thrown off.

After the wheelie, the scooter seems to get an idea of where it wants to go. Veering onto the grounds, it starts going hell-for-leather towards the dorms.

"OK, we don't drive inside. Seriously, what scooter doesn't know that," Will said, clamping HARD down on the brakes.

As Will clamps down on the brakes, the scooter comes to a rather sudden stop. So sudden in fact that it almost feels like it's trying to buck Will off.

Will wrapped her hands around and around and around the handles -- she merge with them, if possible.

"Nuh-uh. You're not getting rid of me that easily. You're going to tire out, and then we're taking you right back where you belong, you hear?"

Looking up, Will can see they're on the girls' side of the dorms.

The Vespa's horn honks twice, cheerily.

Seemingly unsatisfied with the lack of reaction, the scooter lets out a long, obnoxious honk.

Emilie leaned out the window to see what was going on outside.

"Will?" She said, furrowing her brow in confusion. "You can ride th'bike if you stay on campus. Jus'... less loud maybe?" She stated, yawning.
