Claw-nicure

The place Wanda had picked was nice enough and the manicurists were nice enough not to say anything about Isolde's nails. A hairdresser in the place even offered to try and tame her hair a bit. She seemed to take it as some sort of challenge. Wanda watched with some amusement as Isolde went through all this. Finally, the torture was through and they stepped out of establishment. "Now... was that so bad?"

"I think you had more fun than I did, but I suppose it was tolerable," Isolde says as she steps out.

"I'll grant that it's an acquired taste, but new things, right? You look lovely, by the way."

"I still don't quite get the point, unless there's an ex you're trying to make jealous."

"No, no exes," Wanda says, opting not to mention that 'girlfriend' that everyone seemed to think she used to have. "What do you get for the werewolf who has everything?"

"Suppose that's for the best. I'm not exactly a catch as it is."

"And... I don't know. I've been traveling light."

"Well, we started with the makeover, and I believe I promised you a drink." She loops her arm through Isolde's and begins walking towards the Rose & Crown. "And you shouldn't sell yourself short like that."

"I'm honestly not fishing for sympathy here. Being what I am has changed me inside and out. I know that makes me... how did you put it? An acquired taste."

"But that's probably better discussed over drinks if you really do want to know."

"Drinks then," Wanda says, keeping quiet until they were in the Rose and seated at a table with their drinks.

"I genuinely don't know where to start, and I'm not in the habit of sharing spontaneously."

"So I'll ask, what do you want to know?"

Wanda considers that for a long moment, scrutinizing her again. "Why did you choose what you did?"

She nods, "I realize you didn't explicitly say 'I want to be a werewolf'."

"No, I said that I wanted to live."

"I was born and raised in Würzburg. You remember when we first met? When I talked to you about the witch trials?"

"I was the one caught kissing the burgomaster's daughter in the barn."

"Greta. And because she was the burgomaster's daughter, and I was only the miller's daughter, then of course I was the one who bewitched her to act unnaturally."

Wanda frowns, "I hate that 'it's unnatural' skitprat. I suppose it was a different time, but that doesn't make it any less contemptible." She takes a deep breath, "So you were turned into an ultimate survivor."

"The night before I was to be burned, the dwarf came to me. He offered me a chance. I was hurt. Angry. Desperate."

"It wasn't until much later I realized all the stories the dwarf was in."

Wanda suddenly looks at her sharply, "Dwarf?" The way she says the word, she's not asking for idle clarification.

"Still gets around quite a bit. Showed up to taunt me just before the vampires made their move."

"Dwarf. Dark hair? Penchant for cutting the legs off rabbits and singing to himself in German?"

"I'm German, Wanda. We all sang in German, and we all ate rabbits when we could because rabbits are delicious."

"He's a dealmaker. He's attracted to the old families like a fly to honey. Doesn't go away if you guess his name because as far as anyone knows, he doesn't have one."

"There was a dwarf in my vision, before I went down to the cave. He was singing to himself..." She manages to recite the gist of the song, though her German is tourist German.

"Ah yes, I think Rumpelstiltskin amuses him. It was almost certainly about him, but fairy tales always end with the evil one banished or dead, don't they?"

"In the modern context, they do. People like their 'heroes' to win. People got tired of being reminded that darkness can just as easily consume light as be chased away by it." There's a slight crackle along the fingertips of her right hand and she shakes it away. Apparently remembering the dwarf stirred up something.

"Well I assure you, in his case he's never truly sent away."

"As for the deals? It's like a casino. Always bet on the house."

"Well, he's never actually offered, but I'll consider myself warned." She finishes her drink and signals for another one. She breathes out a sigh. "So I take it the price was significantly higher than a monthly full moon bender."

"The price was I could never have children."

"I know people now are very modern about that sort of thing, but back then all of us thought we'd have children."

“I can understand that. I’m not opposed to the concept. Maybe a few years after I’m done with university. Assuming whoever I’m with at the time isn’t opposed to the idea.”

"There is... something in me that craves a challenge. That doesn't want it easy."

"When I put a wolf in someone, they usually aren't up to that challenge. One way or another, they disappoint. But all the same I haven't stopped. Perhaps that does say something about me and lost causes."

"I suppose that devotion to lost causes makes you perfect for me," Wanda says with a chuckle, accepting her new drink and taking a sip.
