On The Outside, Looking In

Progress was going well on her projects at the school, so Natalie had decided to take a brief trip downtown just to walk around and look at things. She passed by some restaurants she likes, looking briefly in the windows before walking on down the street.

"Ooooh, Nika!" said a short, red-haired girl coming down the other way. "I swear, you just did that to embarrass me."

"Non-sense. I'm sure they have people asking about artisanal, hand squeezed toothpaste all the time." Nika manages with a straight face.

"Well, someone has to make it! Somewhere! It might well have been in the back!"

Natalie looks up at the conversation, tilting her head as she gauges the concept of 'artisanal toothpaste' and tries to identify the two people discussing it.

"Absolutely, next to the guy who wraps toiletpaper onto the little cardboard tubes all day."

"You're enjoying yourself," Katarina accused.

"I simply have appreciation for my job." she says diplomatically.

"Appreciation, my butt," Katrina declared.

Arguing with Nika so much, Katarina wasn't really paying attention to where she was going, and was on a collision course with Natalie.

Natalie is so busy trying to figure out who they are that she doesn't realize she needs to get out of the way or even get adjusted for the collision. She goes down in a heap with Katarina. She's more solid than a young woman of her build should be.

Nika does catch on to the collision about to happen, but she's too slow to stop it. Instead she's quick to grab Natalie by the collar and try to haul her away from Katarina, with little success.

Instinctively -- and as a result of Nika's training -- Katarina went golden when the two went down in a heap, making the pile even heavier and more difficult to move.

Natalie starts trying to help extract herself from the pile, "I'm really sorry. I should have..." She blinks at Katarina being all golden now, which probably makes her less helpful in extracting herself from the situation than she could be.

Nika let's go of Natalie's scruff and grabs her shoulder instead, hard enough to notice how hard it is underneath the fake skin. Most peoples' gut reaction probably would not be 'robot' but most people aren't drilled on Viktor von Doom's methods.

"Careful, y--Katarina! She could be a Doombot!"

"What? But...but it doesn't LOOK like Doom!" Katarina said, trying (and failing) to extricate herself.

"I... what?" Natalie sounds confused. "Doombot? What?" It's really hard to extricate yourself when someone has your shoulder, but she's doing her best and partially succeeding this time.

"Well maybe he... build one that looks like someone else..." she weakly points out. Even she has to admit that it's unlikely. While certainly cunning, Doctor Doom liked to be overly theatric and self-indulgent and Natalie was acting anything but. She releases her grip on her shoulder.

"I am so sorry," Katarina was babbling. "I didn't see you there at all. I wasn't expecting anyone directly in front of me."

"It's alright," Natalie says, dusting herself off. "I was preoccupied and should have moved. My apologies. The gold... you must be one of the students at the school I'm not familiar with."

I am Katarina and this is my bod....buddy Nika."

Natalie nods, "Since early last term. My name's Natalie."

"Well, I apologize for meeting on the wrong foot here.

...Why does Nika think you are a Doombot?"

"That's kind of a long story," Natalie says, lowering her voice a bit and looking around.

Katarina also looked around, confused.

"What are we looking for?"

"People who might overhear, I'd imagine. Are you a robot?" she asks, quietly and with less paranoia in her voice. Still a bit of suspicion though, no need to drop her guard entirely.

"Yes and no," Natalie says. "I'm a technopath currently inhabiting a robot body, if you want to be absolutely precise."

The glazed look Katarina had demonstrated the level to which she understood Natalie's comments.

"That's a....very interesting situation!"

"Not strictly a yes," Natalie says, bristling just slightly. "Just... sort of a yes."

"Sort of a yes? In what way 'sort of a yes'?"

"It's... complicated and not totally understood at the moment. Being a robot implies some sort of programming, which isn't completely what I have going on."

Katarina blushed -- looking quite odd on a golden statue.

"I...just was coming down to pick up some necessities, that's all..."

"Katarina has lived... bit of a sheltered life in some ways." Nika says diplomatically. "We're getting her used to the real world." she adds, a little less politely and a little more amused.

"To be fair, the real world kind of sucks," Natalie says with a smile, "I imagine it can be quite the adjustment depending on the sheltering."
