Calling in Sick

Though many students might prefer going to London, Maldon provides closer amenities for those without a car or unwilling to pay for a cab. Several pubs are available, though the Rose and Crown is notable for having been where Excalibur spent a good deal of their downtime. Also of note is the Plume Library, home to many rare books.

That was the moment Natalie had been waiting for. "I'm on Void," she says into the radio. With that, she tries to tackle Void back down the hallway into the level below, trying to get Void's attention and put as much distance between her and everyone else as she could.

Sean's mind whirls for a moment as he tries to think of a spell that won''t cook everybody in the room. He makes a complicated gesture and then points at Manikin. Energy coalesces on his fingertip before lashing out at the automaton. Moisture along the spells path froze turning the room from a thunderstorm into more of a snow... er ice globe (room).

At the same time as Will makes a break for Reach he throws himself out of cover after... something. Will crashes into the operating table which is torn from the floor and slams into the ground where Reach was a moment before. As a layer of frost settles on everything Will can spot Reach scrambling after the oval sphere he'd been holding that has rolled across the room.

Somewhere in the chaos that the room has becomes Archaea is crawling along the wall trying to get away.

Manikin is reeling his arm back in when Sean casts his spell and after a moment enough frost seems to get into the workings that it stops the wire from retracting his arm, leaving him with it dangling from two or three feet of wire. He tries to whip it around into Tosh's path, but it's not fast enough to stop the giant shark from punching him. He does, however, release what keeps his head in place, so when Bruce punches it his head goes flying backwards to absorb some of the impact. Meanwhile his other hand slides open between two fingers and a foot long metal spike shoots out that he rams into Bruce's side.

The last thing Void expects from people that have seen her in action is actively moving towards her, so she's caught off-guard when Natalie goes right for the tackle. It's because of that that she's actually pulled along as the two fall down through the hole in the floor and into the basement. Void lands with a loud crash, Natalie's weight on top of her, leaving a perfect imprint of her silhouette in the floor. She's not even dazed and with one arm pushes Natalie off of herself with enough force to send the heavy robot encased in a mech-suit flying off and crashing through an adjacent wall.

Will had no idea what was in the oval sphere. It probably was nothing good, though.

So he shot out one foot to try to kick the sphere as hard as he could, trying to stretch it our faster than Reach could crawl.

Sean looks around the room for a new target since Tosh and Manikin are now trading blows in close. Seeing Reach not too close to Will Sean reaches for a vial of iron dust that he pours out and begins chanting a new spell. Several small circles of energy forms on the ceiling above Reach. Chains of red energy form and fly downwards towards Reach trying to tie themselves around limbs and bind Reach to keep him from doing whatever he was scrambling to do.

Sean's spell forces Reach to throw himself to the side to avoid the chains suddenly slamming down from above him, which allows Will's leg to kick the strange egg, bouncing it into the wall and sending it skidding across the floor erratically. Reach, from behind a curtain of magical chains, flicks out one of the knives from his belt, slicing off Will's leg and leaving a gouge in the floor that catches Sean at the tail end, leaving a (relatively) shallow cut across his shoulder and arm, blood welling up after a couple seconds.

Bruce grabs Manikin's arm. The material is resilient, with at least a little bit of give, but after a moment Bruce can feel it giving away as it cracks under the pressure. It's the crack more than the spike that gives the electricity a path to discharge through and from there it seems to travel along the connecting wire to the rest of Manikin. He twitches for a moment and then seems to fall apart into his various segments, collapsing in a loose heap on the floor.

Checking the weapon's maximum distance only brings up a theoretical calculation showing a potential fall-off for the graviton beam at a distance of several kilometers. Meanwhile the broken chunk of concrete flies right at Void's head and shatters into a cloud of dust and debris while having roughly zero effect on the woman. In response she hurls herself forward and slams into Natalie with enough force to max up any compensators and sensors immediately. The concrete wall she's slammed through a moment later registers as almost insignificant in comparison. The two keep going until Natalie is rammed into a metal wall of some sort and Void jumps backwards off of her while she remains partially embedded into what appears to be the morgue's wall of dead-people-drawers.

Then she leaps straight up and punches through the ceiling.

At least, she thinks, a robotic body gives you the luxury of not feeling pain. She looks at the hole and fires up some of the supports, trying to leap to follow Void, though nowhere near as gracefully.

Sean winces and the curtain of chains collapses as his focus is disrupted. Sean places a hand on his cut shoulder.

"At least blood is a useful component," Sean mutters through gritted teeth before flicking out his cut arm in Reach's direction and growling out a spell. The blood droplets expand and lengthen in the air into several spears that launch themselves towards Reach.

While Will is regrowing his leg Reach pushes himself off the wall and slides across the floor towards the white sphere. In doing so he disregards Sean entirely and two of the spears slam into him, one grazing his cheek and the other impaling his leg and nailing it to the floor. He barks out a pained laugh as he watches Will throw himself at him and brings up one of his knives. "Clever..." he's forced to admit as he flicks the blade at Will, slicing him open from hip to shoulder, spilling out and igniting the explosive Will has filled himself with.

The resulting explosion quickly fills the entire room with enough force to blow out the walls and make the floor sag noticeably.

Sean wasn't built of clay or kaiju, but he was lucky perhaps that he'd stayed closer to the doorway and he was simply tossed back through it by the force of the explosion bouncing off the door frame on his way out. The world was spinning and ringing as he lifted himself to a knee coughing. He could feel something had broken though he wasn't sure what.

"Well, I'm not bloody well dead," Sean said before coughing some more. He channeled energy into one of his rings forming defensive shield in front of him that he could hide behind until the dust and ringing settled.

The gun spins up, segments on the arm of Natalie's armor opening and venting excess heat as her targeting sensors lock in on the rapidly approaching Void. There's a noticeable blowback pushing her down when the gun fires, emitting a condensed gravitational beam that sucks in enough air to cause a gust of wind around Natalie. With nothing to push herself off of there's little Void can do to dodge and the shot hits her straight on. The beam passes around her and she continues to plummet down towards Natalie but bit by bit her descend slows until she comes to a complete stop mere inches from the barrel of the gun, suspended in the beam still firing into the sky, distorting the clouds into a swirling vortex where it passes through them.

Void's grin doesn't seem diminished in any way as she reaches out, one fingertip leaving a tiny gauge in the muzzle before something gives and she's flung upwards along the blast, disappearing into the sky at tremendous speed and this time it doesn't seem like she's coming back down any time soon.

---------------

Down below the dust slowly settles. One wall slowly topples over into the adjoining room. Another has chunks of white metal embedded in it and it takes a moment to visually parse that it's the separated pieces of Manikin, their configuration all jumbled up but individually intact. He seems fairly stuck however.

Reach is lieing against the wall on the other side of the room in pretty rough shape, propping himself up but bleeding from various spots.

Nearby the operating table that got torn free and blown across the room is lieing against the wall at an angle, cowered beneath it a shaking Archaea is clutching the white sphere Reach had been trying to grab. It's cracked and a familiar grey goop - or clay - is leaking out of it.

The floor groans loudly with the sound of concrete and rebar bending and sags about an inch, threatening to collapse at the slightest provocation.

Natalie drops to one knee, the suit's system blinking at her in angry red that every battery in the right arm is somehow at less than 0% charge and not responding to power reroutes. A brief thought and the errors are muted, though no less insistent even in their silence. A quick once-over of the system seems to indicate that the rest of the suit is functional, if battered and starting to run low on power. She struggles to her feet and moves back over to the hole in the roof, using her power to key her radio. "This is Intercept. Void handled... I hope. Everyone okay down there?"

A quick message fires off to Ashlie:

The goop that, given the chance would identify itself as one Will Stanton, immediately begins to grow explosively. Pseudopods shoot out of it like a giant amoeba, punching into the walls and radiating out along it, small tendrils at it's end turning into grasping fingers. Archaea let's out a startled scream before she disappears from sight inside the growing bulk of organic mass. The already strained floor finally gives in under the added weight and the giant chunk of Will-goop falls into the basement. By now it's big enough that it doesn't really disappear from view though, it just turns into a column sticking out from below as a constantly shifting mass. Giant eyes open only to fuse and disappear when they 'blink', flailing tentacles briefly turn into arms with way, way too many fingers that move in strange rippling waves as they're dragged along the wall before merging back into the tentacle arm.
