Battle of Maldon II

Though many students might prefer going to London, Maldon provides closer amenities for those without a car or unwilling to pay for a cab. Several pubs are available, though the Rose and Crown is notable for having been where Excalibur spent a good deal of their downtime. Also of note is the Plume Library, home to many rare books.

Battle of Maldon II

Postby Narrator » Tue Feb 16, 2016 5:11 am

From a time portal in Maldon's harbor, two ships emerged, and quickly began to be involved in a pitched battle for landing rights.

One was a classic Viking longship--a long, thin, narrow thing with a large cloth sail and a boatload of Viking warriors on it.

The other was a Pirate ship of the line, as would normally be found in the Carribean in the 1600s, with the filthiest scallewags you ever did see on it.

The pirate ship opened up fire with it's cannons on the waterfront shopping center of Maldon.

"Well, that's not fair.. Do Vikings even have ship cannons?"

Kayla made a face as she floated towards the ships from the wharf.

Nailah comes in flying above the buildings to investigate the other time bubbles as per Tosh's request when things suddenly pop into existence. Her eyes go wide, especially when the ship opens fire.

Spotting a figure floating in the air she goes into a dive to get within shouting distance of Kayla. "Hey! You got a plan for dealing with this?"

"Take out the guns, and wait for the Royal Navy to show up was the general idea.."

She swooped low, aiming to keep out of the firing angles of the pirate ship.

"I can probably keep them from reaching the wharf, but but I can't deal with both ships at once!"

I want to take out the cannons. How can I stop the Viking ship? How can I protect the harbor from the cannons?

As she's flying Nailah kept asking her power for ways to deal with things but only comes up with throbs of headache. But when she asks how to best help Kayla with the situation she suddenly finds a path again. "Ooh! You do that. I got something!" Her whole body-language seems to change as she suddenly moves with much more sense of purpose through the air towards the pirate ship, diving down and flying only a couple feet above the water. Her approach takes her right into the cannon-fire, dodging and swerving around cannonballs as if she knew where they were going to be before they're even fired.

Kayla veered toward the Vikings, gaining speed as she neared the longship.

With a loud thump she landed near the stern, holding fast for the few moments needed to cast her net. After a few seconds, she had tapped into the mental potential of every single human on board.

As several tough Vikings swooned with lightheadness, she focused on the large rudder, attempting to use her boosted Tk power to jam it in one direction, and send it in circles.

Kayla was sloooowly turning the rudder. Success!

The boat was headed for shore. Success!

That means Vikings might be able to get out and start pillaging. Suc...suc...success?

A few vikings had reached shore before Kayla managed to get the boat away, and Carlos had to face off with them.

A couple of the large, burly vikings attempted to tackle and take down Kayla before she could do more damage.

Meanwhile, Nailah managed to kick a pirate over as she landed. Good! ANd now she was surrounded by pirates. Bad!

Nailah ducks down and pulls the pirate's sword free, bringing it around to face the ones surrounding her. "No chance we could negotiate, is there? Right. I figured." She really doesn't know how to wield a sword properly, but thankfully her power is still letting her go on auto-pilot and she swings the blade at the nearest pirate to make him back off so she can make her way towards the door leading under deck.

Sean was little late to the party but really hadn't been prepared for a viking warship or pirates. However, what's a bit of time traveling craziness to a mage and he adapted as quickly as he could.

"Cavalry has arrived," Sean said before preparing a spell. Brilliant red circles full of runes appeared around his hands. The magic coalesced into a ball of fire, which he launched at the pirate ship seeing as it had well, cannons. <"Fires of Faltline.">

KAYLA
The Vikings were flustered--who WAS this lady?

Deciding that she couldn't fight them ALL off, they tried a massive charge towards her.

NAILAH
Nailah's power wasn't a perfect replacement for years of training with cutlasses, but it was better than nothing, and she made her way to the door under the deck, sword-fighting and swash-buckling her way past a few of the pirates.

"Arrr! Ye be a feisty minx, but ye aren't getting off this boat alive, landlubber."

SEAN
And now the sails were on fire. THAT seemed like a problem for the pirates.

A cannonball was launched in his general direction.

Sean wasn't about to go dodging cannon balls and instead channeled energy into the runes carved into the overlapping plates on his arm. The cannon ball exploded against an invisible sphere of energy and several of the rune covered plates cracked violently.

Have to work on making those last longer.

"That's gonna leave a bloody mark," Sean coughed.

Sean directed his energy into another spell. Another series of runes swirled around his hands as he tried something else to keep the pirates cannons aimed at him rather than the neighborhood around him.

<"Spears of the Seraphim"> Sean chanted as reality groaned. Lightning crackled from his hands and condensed into several spears floating above his head. They then launched towards the cannons on the pirate ship. He hoped to ignite the gunpowder the gunners were using to reload the cannons or at least make for some very unhappy and shocked sailors.

"Then you leave me no choice!" she grins and rushes at the pirates, going into a slide just before she runs into their weapons, twisting herself around to slip between their legs. Without looking she blindly sticks her foot out to catch a distorted floorboard at just the right angle with her claws to use her momentum to hop upright again behind the pirates and grab a big barrel to topple. Unfortunately it turns out to be heavier than she can casually tip over and for a moment she just awkwardly grins before grabbing it with both hands to try and topple the barrel full of gun powder again.

Nailah narrowly manages to clear the porthole before part of the ship explodes, sending her flying on the shockwave. Unfortunately that's not very conductive to actual flying and she's thrown into the water of the harbor, ever so slightly skidding off the surface once before crashing into the waves.

The moment of satisfaction at seeing the pirate ship go up in a ball of flame was drowned out by seeing Nailah hit the water (also a bit of guilt from not waiting to make sure the boat was clear of team members) and Kayla getting overwhelmed by vikings.

<"Ascension of Aeolus"> Sean said casting a minor levitation spell on Nailah. Figuring at the very least Nailah was probably the most in danger (or maybe he was feeling a bit guilty about the whole affair).

He then turned and cast the same minor spell on the vikings hoping that forcing a few to float a few feet above the ground would help Kayla out.
