The man coughs, his eyes closed, "I will live. Thank you."

"Do you need us to take you to the hospital?"

"No... no... they found me here, I would not be safe there and others might come to harm."

"What exactly are they after you for?"

"... Do we offer to take him back to the school, Sphinx?" she thought to her partner a her brow furrowed in concern.

"We might be able to help...who is after you, sir?"

The man coughs again, his eyes rolling slightly as he struggles with unconsciousness. "Not now. Not here."

While Haley is helping the man up, Nailah is going around the groaning thugs one by one, pulling them up by the collar and delivering pretty precise blows to their heads to knock them unconscious. It's pretty cold and mechanical and probably unnecessary.

The old man glances over at Nailah, something like... admiration in his eyes. "I did not expect to find a..." He seems to search for the word, "sphinx here. I am most grateful for both your assistance."

Nailah's expression seems to soften significantly at that, instead of cold determination she grins broadly and proudly.

"Just doing what I can to keep people safe from hoodlums like these."

"Excellent," the man says with a happy smile before unconsciousness finally wins.

"That was... weird. You think he's seen other people with a mutation like mine before?" she wonders idly as she goes kneels down to make sure the man is just passed out and not in need of medical attention.

He may need some medical attention, but from what she can tell he's just unconscious and in no immediate danger.

"Do you think we should take him back to the school?" she asked quietly. "Or see if I can snoop around in there?" she added motioning to her own head.

"I think I probably should..." she said, looking around, then back at the man. "Cover me while I'm in there..." she said, reaching out with her mind to try and get some more information out of the man.

Her initial probe is met with the sensation of light so bright it actually makes her eyes hurt in sympathy for her brain.

Haley gasped audibly and stumbled over a bit of debris in the alley. "Ow, ow, ow...maybe he doesn't want us in there..."

"I feel like I just stared at the sun for like five minutes," she said rubbing her eyes. "Must be some sort of defense...not sure if I should try again or if we should take him back to the school."

"Obviously we just happened to be in town." she smirks. "Keep an eye open, I'll be right back!" she adds before leaping into the air, propelled by a beat of her wings and disappearing over the edge of the roof of the building next to them. After a minute or two she comes gliding back down, wearing jeans and a t-shirt instead of her superhero outfit, although she seems to have forgotten the white domino-mask.

Haley smirked and nodded in agreement before her partner flew off.

"Wait, where did you get those clothes?"

"Someone may or may not have hung up some clothes out to dry and forgot them outside one roof over..." she grins sheepishly. "Don't worry, I'm gonna bring them back!"

"I'm not sure you will once you see how good those jeans make your ass look," she laughed, peeling off her own domino mask and looking down at her outfit, "you know what, lets switch tops. If I'm not wearing all black it looks less like I've been out fighting crime. ...And I like that shirt."

"Fine..." she grouches and turns around to pull off the ill-gotten t-shirt, which is an effort in and of itself, despite it's loose cut somewhat fitting around her wings. "No one ever warns you how much of fighting crime is changing clothes in a dirty alley."

Haley did the same, though she didn't bother turning around. She looked at where Nailah's wings sprouted from her back, holding up her shirt in front of her as if to line the shirt up with her partner. She narrowed her eyes in focus and two slits appeared in the back of her shirt that she then floated over to Nailah. "Enjoy the new workout shirt," she chuckled.

"I... I guess they're alright..." she seems to stumble a bit, her bravado in punching goons apparently not translating very well to receiving compliments. "I mean they can be kinda inconvenient..." she adds, tugging down her shirt and suddenly being very interested in double-checking the zip-ties on the passed out people.

"Well. I guess you can't really sleep on your back comfortably...but they're still gorgeous."

Haley, sensing the discomfort, helped double check the ties as well. "So are we leaving these guys here or taking them back with us?"

"Might as well bring them." she nods, much more comfortable with shop-talk than obvious flirting. It's not that she doesn't appreciate it, but she has no idea how to actually handle or respond to it outside of glancing over at Haley when she thinks she isn't looking.

Getting the school to scoop up the goons and the injured man isn't terribly difficult and soon the former are safely ensconced in the holding cells and the latter is in a bed in the infirmary being monitored by the staff.

Nailah, after a shower and a quick nap, heads over to the medical center to see if the man is in any condition to talk yet.

The man is recovering, remarkably healthy given his age. The nurse says he just overexerted himself and after the standard admonition to not bother the patient too much, he allows Nailah into the room. The old man looks over as she enters and his smile broadens and he says, somewhat formally, "Tahiat taybtun, wa'abu alhul."

"My apologies, I fall back on the familiar and formalities and you are the first sphinx that I have seen in years. Not the typical form, mind you, but I suppose the world is changing whether we wish it to or not. Thank you again for coming to my aid."

Haley, similarly cleaned-up (though she'd been way to amped up from the fight to rest, regardless of how tired she now felt), came in a moment later. "It's what we do," Haley smiled, "Her more than me. She's been at it longer."
