Requiem for an Ace Face

On the appointed Saturday, a man in his twenties is standing in the parking lot of Morrisons supermarket, next to a pickup truck that's seen better days. His hair is in a Caesar cut that's grown out a little, and he has a faint scattering of stubble across his jawline. He looks like he's lost some sleep lately.

In the bed of the truck is a lovingly maintained 80's scooter.

"Ah! That's gotta be him!" Emilie exclaimed to Victor as they approached together. Emilie had only provided brief details to Vic on where they were going but the word Craigslist seemed to be enough to convince him she shouldn't be traveling alone.

The man narrows his eyes a bit as he spies Em.

"...this isn't a mods and rockers thing, is it?"

"Issat like struts and bearings?" Victor asked, unaware of the meaning of the term, or it's accuracy.

"Dude, no worries. You can listen to as much Ska as you want. I just want yer scooter." She smirked.

"You're not going to do anything... unnatural with her, are you?"

Victor furrowed his brow. "... what kinda inquiries have you been gettin'? Was this posted in Missed Connections?"

Emilie arched an eyebrow.

"For reals yo'." Emilie concurred with Victor. " I didn't realize 'rocker people' had some weird fetishistic tendencies towards mopeds in this country."

"I've heard stories of rockers who like to buy these and trash 'em, like. It's a revenge thing, and all."

"Dude, I dunno what the newspapers are tellin' you about kids these days, but no one my age has the kinda money to throw away on stuff they're gonna smash. If she decides to get this thing it's 'cause she can't afford a Robin Reliant."

"Plus, we're Canadian." Emilie adds. " The worst we could possibly do to your bike is get in a car accident not our fault and then send you a lengthy apology letter." She clarified, hoping to appeal to this guy's obvious taste for stereotypes.

"We don't care about whatever beef you Brits got going with each other."

"...well alright. What did you want to see on her? I can get her down from there if you want to take a closer gander."

"Yeah let's get her down. Gotta make sure you ain't selling me a pretty doorstop, right? " She says, her excitement ramping up ever so slightly.

The young man lowers the tailgate of the truck and wheels the scooter back before hefting it up and depositing it on the pavement. He seems reasonably strong, but simply tired when he sets it down with a huff.

"There's a little bit of petrol still in her, if you want to do a once around the lot."

Emilie seemed to give the whole thing a once over, checking very specific parts. Once she was satisfied, she hopped on.

"Vic, you wanna do me the honor of helping me test her out?" She said, patting the seat behind her.

"Sure, I guess so. I mean we gotta make sure it can haul both of us huh?"

Victor thought maybe it would be more re-assuring for the seller if he stayed off the bike, to make sure they didn't run off with it. But given it's size and the small amount of fuel it wasn't likely they could have gotten far if they had. He did a Riker step over the back of the bike to sit behind Emilie and wrapped his hands around the little seatbelt that wasn't big enough for anything to fit under.

The scooter has a good spring to it, so at least the tires and suspension aren't shot. The young man dangles out a keychain at arm's length, wincing slightly as he gives Em the key.

Emilie stuck out her tongue in between a greedy smile and snatched them away.

Perhaps to the mod's relief, she kept her word and didn't run off, just making a few laps around the parking lot.

Victor was nervous, of course, but it was the nervousness that came with being a passenger and giving up control to someone else. Still, the thing moved quickly enough and seemed to be able to take both their weight and perhaps a little more.

There's a faint zap as Em puts the key in and turns it, but that just might be dry November weather. The thing is zippy. Sure, it would probably tip over if she ran over anything so much as an acorn, but it's got plenty of get up and go and is decently responsive in turns.

Emilie was far too delighted at how well things were going, but the shock did cause her a bit of concern.

Still, it was a Vespa. How much could a small electrical issue cost to fix? Probably not that much but....

"Everything looks good, 'cept it buzzed me when I put the key in. If I gotta get that fixed it's gonna cost me...

Will you take 780 on accounta that? "

"Oh come on," the young man sighs. "You're not going to stiff me twenty quid for static electricity."

"Dude, seriously? How much you think everyone else is gonna try to barter you down just cuz they can? And further, how many of them you think are gonna offer to pay you cash in hand and not try to write you a check or something?

If there's something wrong, I'm going to have to find the part and con some stupid boy at school to put it in for me.

AND it's not like you recently filled it or anything so I am gonna hafta gas it up to get it home.

20 is getting off easy. "

"Yeah, I ain't an expert on haggling but I do know that you usually ask for more than you usually think you'll get, so that when someone talks you down you still get what you really wanted. So she must like ya or somethin' to not be trying to beat the price down too much."

"See? So by definition this is your best offer." Emilie replies, trying not to sound smug.

"Besides, think of how far 780 quid would go towards the wedding."

Victor managed to go more pale before breathing a sigh of relief. "Oh, his wedding." He mumbled.

"We gotta deal or what?"

"...fine," he sighs, going to the passenger side of the pickup and pulling out a document.

He brings it over to Em with a well-worn ballpoint pen. It's quite clearly something he printed out off of the internet to cover his own behind, containing language such as 'as-is' and 'no implied warranty.'

Emilie didn't seem to mind signing it, as she didn't intend to bring it back anyways. It wasn't exactly dealership material, so she did expect there to be problems she had yet to entirely ascertain, but it would work for her purposes for now.

"You are sucha No Fun Mrs. Grundy sometimes dude." That caused her some pause for a moment before going.

"We should take this out. There's a Taco Bell in Colchester. I hear they got chicken tacos and actual churros on the menu in this country." Emilie suggested.

"I can use the phone to take the backroads."

"Solomon Grundy has a wife?" Like most of the time spent talking to Emilie, Victor didn't get the reference. A few dozen lifetimes of media meant that one's repertoire might be a little broader than most. Though he was all for going for a spin, even if only to ignore English cuisine and get some petrol in the process. It wasn't until he straddled the back of the bike again that something occurred to him.

"Hey Em, where are the helmets?"
