...OK, not 'normal' per se, but they were probably closer to the idealized cells you'd find in a beginner's biology textbook than any actual cells were. That's the advantage, one supposed, of working on Will -- no in-depth biology knowledge required.
They seemed to be producing, on the cellular level, their own crystalline structures; most likely microscopic doses of MGH. The street value of that lump of clay must be off the charts.
