DT1: Kids With Guns

The site of the recently restored Braddock Lighthouse. Aircraft hangars and other X-Men facilities, including a Cerebra unit and the Danger Room have been constructed around the foundations of the lighthouse.

DT1: Kids With Guns

The boy sat in the lotus position on the floor of his cell, or as close as he could get without searing pain in his knee. His black assassin ensemble had been replaced by an orange prison-style jumpsuit. He seemed to be meditating.

A loud bang against the big reinforced plexiglass window interrupts his meditation.

It wasn't long before Gideon entered the detention center. He was dressed for class not for interrogations, so he probably didn't look like the most imposing figure.

Gideon took a seat across from Deathhawk and liked at the kid.

"Not all kids are created equal, eh," Gideon smiled.

He then looked at the teenage assassin with an impassive expression.

"Last chance to come clean, kid."

Right after the words had tumbled out of the child assassins mouth Gideon reached out with his powers. He probed the kids mental defenses because he didn't want to actually ruin the kids mind.

What defenses there were were well drilled into him, but if there were any not entirely of the mundane kind then they were more deeply buried. He was clearly stubborn as well, which meant he would've been hard to break through mundane means and hard to fix. However Gideon had better means, didn't he?

Gideon pushed at the seams of Deathhawk's mind seeing the kid was trained to deal with the mundane art of physical torture and psychic intrusion. He reached not for information about the assassin's organization, which would likely be closely guarded but instead for a memory from before the organization. Hoping for a thread to finesse apart the tapestry of Deathhawk's mind rather than the brute force alternative.

The memories themselves are buried behind a metaphorical veil of darkness. The organization had done quite the job of hiding away the Self from his mind. Deep within the darkness, however, is a light, a memory shining too brightly to be fully extinguished. Something moved in the shadows around it, obscuring it.

As Gideon moved towards the light, the image of a red bike coalesces within it. A birthday present.

But as he got even closer, the sound of enormous wings flapping took form.

Gideon walked towards the red bike he pushed his powers outwards feeling for connections to the bicycle or what was making the flapping the noise.

His avatar was cloaked its form completely hidden behind worn threadbare fabric, but despite its bedraggled appearance the avatar exuded menace.

The bike was a happy memory, linked to family, friends, a sense of freedom and childlike invincibility. A perfect mental anchor. The wings were of the darkness, of the Shadow. It spoke of servitude and surrender to emptiness. It was the embodiment of the boy's new self, or lack thereof.

A monstrous bird took form over the bike, wicked shapes writhing beneath it.

Gideon continued walking towards the light and began channeling psychic energy into the bicycle to make it an even brighter beacon of positive emotion.

"This is not your place, crow." Gideon spoke his cloak billowing behind him revealing bits of burnished armor beneath it.

The Death Hawk screeched in pain and indignation, spreading it's shadowy wings wider.

"I am a Shadow, the self detached from the lie of emotion. Begone from here, interloper," it said in a voice part the boy, part something other.

Gideon pushed more energy into the bicycle anchor, but also began looking for the giant bird's anchor as well.

The bird, it seemed, was an internalized manifestation of ideas implanted by what was only temporarily an external influence, most likely induced by hallucinogens but possibly aided by telepathy. It was anchored in feelings of grief and fear, particularly a fear of drowning.
