Sept 2nd - Introduction to Super Science

The site of the recently restored Braddock Lighthouse. Aircraft hangars and other X-Men facilities, including a Cerebra unit and the Danger Room have been constructed around the foundations of the lighthouse.

"And there he is, excellent. Welcome, Mister Riley." she smiles. "Now, as I mentioned, this concerns your potential to take a specialized Engineering course." she says as she gestures for them to follow her into the Point. The doors hiss open and she leads them down into the futuristic-looking briefing room that forms the central core of the facility. There are numerous monitors and consoles showingall kinds of data.

"I'm sure you're all familiar with the the works of people like Forge and Tony Stark. The things they create are well beyond what normal Engineering is capable of producing and their work has advanced scientific progress tremendously. What I am offering you, is a course that will be very taxing but, if you manage to take advantage of the potential you have, incredibly rewarding."

The monitors mostly show things that are involved in standard operations. There's some information on the weather outside (21° Celsius, 12km/h wind from north-west), the status of the Danger Room (currently empty and turned off) or the holding cells (all empty).

"Safe is a broad term. While it would not be frowned upon if you decide to built tools that would allow you to keep pace with the more combat oriented mutations of your peers, ideally you would do so without creating things that could be lethal. So in that sense, no, you would not be building things designed to cause undue harm. This is not meant to be a weapons factory." she smiles reassuringly.

Ashlie leads them down one of the hallways and finally through one of the heavy metal doors that opens automatically and with a faint hiss when they approach it. Inside is a huge open space. Several workbenches are placed evenly spaced throughout the room, each one with enough free space next to it to easily accommodate a car or similarly sized object. The workbenches appear to have an almost screen-like surface and when Ashlie steps up to one of them it jumps to life and displays a translucent screen that hangs in mid-air above the workbench.

"Courtesy of Stark Industries." she says and moves her hand through the screen to bring up the schematic for the workbench itself, pulling it out and turning it into a three-dimensional object. "They automatically synch with any device that you register to it so you have access to all your files from here. They come pre-loaded with a couple schematics and are equipped with a standard array of tools. The room has a total of four assembly arms that move along the ceiling and in the back a small material lab provides a 3D-printer and high-end forge for components that cannot easily be printed. Training you in the use of both will be the first segment of the course."

The bench seems to match the schematic down to the last detail, barring a couple surface details that come from handling and installing components. At the very least, there's nothing hidden in the bench that isn't shown in the schematic. Of course some components aren't necessarily self-evident in their purpose without studying the schematic in more detail, but nothing out of the ordinary stands out.

Ashlie takes a couple steps away from the workbench and indicates a door on the left side of the room. "Over there is the storage area. We have most materials that you would want, not including more exotic components. It might be possible to procure some of them, but you should have a good reason prepared if you want to convince me to do so."

"Excellent." she chuckles. "And very nicely done. I will email you all the necessary reading material for the semester, please finish the introductory chapter in time for the first class, which will be on Thursday from 4pm to 6pm right here. I am not a big proponent of reciting a text to you, so expect to do a lot of reading in preparation for classes, which will focus more on practical lessons. If you have any questions or issues with the text I will of course answer any questions that may come up."
