Clad in his training suit, Shane waited in a blank Danger Room for Will to arrive. As he did, he experimented with growing his right hand into different shapes. Currently, this meant wiggling extended vine fingers.

"It was rather gradual, actually. It didn't really manifest itself right off the bat, and there was a long time when I was still a person who shifted into clay, rather than clay shaped like a person. There's a fine line somewhere in there."

"It's kind of hard to define, but yeah--I think it's been a long time since I could really be considered flesh-and-blood as a basis, you know? I mean, go back far enough, and there I am, but I'm not that anymore. Took a bit of time to come to grips with that."

"It's...complicated, in my case.

My sense of self, as a concept of what I look like, has kind of broken down over the years. I was once a brown-haired boy, and that's always what I was, and gradually, over time, that's become less and less what I am.

If you spend enough time as other things, the arguments over physical form and stuff become...trivial's not the right word, but I feel like I'm somewhat beyond those kinds of distinctions."

"...The headmistress decided some of my friends from the Antarctic base weren't human because they were not biological. If that's the classification people want to use, it's not one I care to be part of."

"Sentience is notoriously hard to define, and tends to favor the ones doing the definition.

There are people who think you should respect the rights of trees, right? Environmentalists and the like."

I find when I'm in a form, my reactions are dictated by it's shape. Enjoyable sensations kind of change based on what role I'm taking up--like being in a washing machine is relaxing as clothes, but probably not if I was a human at the time, you know what I'm saying?

Your new plant biology, such as it is, might be working in a very similar way."
