Living In A Powderkeg

Natalie has effectively locked herself away in the workshop. She's still dressed in her black dress, but here she is, sitting in one of the workshop chairs and watching code materialize on a screen. By her face, she's been crying recently, but engrossing herself in her code has shut all of that down. She's also electronically hijacked the workshop's sound system and it is currently blasting some electronic music.

Tosh, having been headed to the workshop to test a spontaneous coding idea on his trio of robot drones, came upon Natalie and could tell without seeing her face that she was upset. For a while, he worked quietly at his own work desk and minded his own business but his empathetic nature soon got the better of him.

"Want to talk about it?" he asked.

"Do you like to talk to people about when you're an idiot?" She says, still mostly focused on her programming. She sighs and takes a deep breath. "I'm sorry. That was unnecessarily harsh."

"It's okay. I'll just... take that as a no," he responded.

There's a long pause, "I... misread a situation. People are too bloody unpredictable... You're missing a semicolon at the end of line 105... I should just stick with machines. Technology is predictable at least."

He corrected his oversight without complaining about backseat coding and said, "But it's that very unpredictability that makes people interesting. Art, music..."

"... romance?" he guessed from the techno 80s love song remix.

That last word makes Natalie wince, but she schools it away. "I don't know. I wish people weren't so interesting sometimes."

"Because then they wouldn't disappoint?"

"I like things that are predictable. I like working with technology. There may be unknown frontiers, but programming is what you expect it to be. The behavior is all there in the structure. It's only our failures of logic or planning that create issues. But people... people..."

"Take more work, I know," he said with a supportive smile, "But a perfectly predictable world would be pretty boring wouldn't it?"

"And it wouldn't hurt."

Perhaps predictably, Tosh promptly walked close and spread his arms in an offer of a hug.

Natalie just looks at him for a moment and then leans in for the hug.

He closed his arms around her and held her gently, without further nosy comment. She'd talk if she wanted to.

After a long silence, she says, "Thanks, Tosh." The tone's a little flat, but that usually means part of her mind is deep into some technology, something he's used to from the Institute.

"As long as you're my friend I'll always be there for you," he answered with another supportive smile as he released her. "Including but not limited to: talking, programming, henchman punching, and, of course, hugs."

She half-smiles, "I appreciate it. Just... I guess I need to stick with tech, forget dealing with people for a while."

"If that's what you think you need. I know I've been there. Just... come back to people soon, okay?"

"I've got more than enough challenges to keep me busy here for a while," she says, "But I have a calendar reminder set to review people interactions."

"Motion-triggered movement-assistance programming," she says, "A small part of a large project. Basically, start to move your leg and the software runs devices that assist with the movement."

"Why would you..." His expression grew curious and then moderately excited. "Oh my God... are you designing power armor? Or... ooh! A gundam!"

"Though probably power armor."

"Armor, yes. I think the British government would object to a giant robot. Although they might object to the armor, but what they don't know right now won't hurt them."

"Well, my uses in X-Men field operations is kind of limited at present. I want to be more helpful, this seems like a logical step."

"Okay then. I don't have anything resembling a doubt you'll have a fantastic software architecture but what about the hardware? I mean, well... I could help there... I guess..." he said with the transparent pretense of it being an imposition. He obviously wanted in.

She raises an eyebrow, the computer behind still writing code, "Tosh, do you want to help?"

"Working on the extremities first. Legs specifically because they don't require fine movements like the fingers. I want to prototype it with the Danger Room before we try anything physical, just for feasibility and budget."

"That's what I did with my significantly less ambitious drones. A VR sandbox is super useful to have access to."
