X-Men Recruitment Routine

The site of the recently restored Braddock Lighthouse. Aircraft hangars and other X-Men facilities, including a Cerebra unit and the Danger Room have been constructed around the foundations of the lighthouse.

X-Men Recruitment Routine

Postby Ashlie Minamida » Mon May 08, 2017 5:31 pm

Ashlie makes her way down to the holding cell area, after the departure of Roland to Muir and the demise of Business Mandy now thankfully a little less crowded, and stops in front of Isolde's cell at 6 pm exactly.

"Good evening. I've been told you want to talk?"

"Are you better at listening than before?" Isolde asks, slowly rousing herself to look up at the headmistress.

Isolde grits her teeth for a moment then lets out a long breath.

"...my 'beliefs' as you put them are backed up by more than superstition or words in a book."

"There are places in this world where there must always be a light. Most humans do not know why anymore, but they did when they still knew hunger and feared beasts prowling beyond the fire's light."

"I told your people this before, and they dismissed it. It amused me at the time."

"I'm not sure you will believe me now, but I can tell you that the hunger and the beasts beyond the campfire are just a shadow cast by the real reason. Like Plato's cave wall, yes?"

"There was a time before humans, a time that humans only know from the scars it left on the world. A time when something slept within the world and, in its dreaming, yearned to know others beyond itself. Many peoples have myths that speak of it, but the Aranda first named it for what it was. The Dreamtime."

"The creatures that walked the world under sunless skies were as you and I are in dreams. Powerful. Limited only by themselves. That being true, they were their own downfall. It came when a serpent became too clever, a brother envied what his sibling had, and Death opened her eyes onto this paradise. These too are things humans know from the shadows they cast."

"Humans inherited what was left of it. Once Death had entered, these beings made war until the eye of the sun opened. They diminished themselves, and having never known the sun they burned under its gaze. Many died where they stood. Some hid within the earth. Others were driven to places beyond knowing."

"They have coveted the world ever since. Tried to creep back in where darkness allowed. Raised up cults who can walk where they cannot. The serpent especially."

"It is a cycle. Were they to grow too bold they would burn again. Where the sun cannot reach, humans know to build fires, to shed light."

"But there is talk of ending the cycle."

Re: X-Men Recruitment Routine

Ashlie looks at Isolde for a while. Which is kind of unsettling, considering she doesn't blink, her processes apparently preoccupied with something. Below them, algorithms churn trying to discern meaning in the illogical. It's not that Ashlie is incapable of philosophical or metaphorical thinking, quite the opposite, but the themes she's dealing with here for some reason keep circling back to Dr. Minamida and she can't seem to trace the path the programming takes. She's not used to being reminded of something without having consciously drawn the connection herself.

"Fire stolen from the gods. Consciousness and ingenuity that were... granted..." Usually Ashlie's pauses in speech are deliberate. This one is not. She was given those things very deliberately. Of course no one granted them to humans. They inherited them from evolutionary pressure and random chance. Of course there's no such thing as truly random chance. Only quantum states and collapsing of probabilities into distinct universal frequencies. She knows these things, but even now most humans would struggle to. A hundred, a thousand years back and they'd only see the effects. Shadows on the cave wall. Werewolves and demons.

"I will accept that we use different terms. What you call Lycantrophy I see as a transmittable shapeshifting property affected by possibly psychological or gravitational effects. What you call the ending of the cycle might be instability in the matrices of the quantum foam forming our local spacetime."

"She's assaulted students and willfully infected you with her own affliction. If you vouch for her change of heart then I'm willing to give her a second chance. Same conditions as you, full moon under strict supervision either in the cells or the Danger Room and at least for a probationary period she'll have to stay within school grounds. Anklet or bracelet, her choice. I assume a collar or subdermal chip would be too on the nose." she says, looking over at Isolde. Was she making a joke? Probably. Was it good? No.
