The large, bulky vessel slowly settled into orbit above a green and blue globe, flashes of lightning illuminating a storm cloud drifting eastward on the world below. Probes automatically launched to atmospheric data and determine an appropriate landing site for the Uexkul, the short-range vessel which would serve as the base of operations for the expedition. And soon, the saucerlike vessel detached from the larger ship and began its fiery descent to the planet below.

Shining eyes watched from the shadowy alien jungle as the strange object began to spit fire from its underside and slow. They watched as it came in for a landing in a clearing near the base of the nearby mountain. When the strange flying creatures emerged, the watcher vanished.

Survey drones had sent back data and the ship's automated systems woke the appropriate team to explore the area. Now, that team took their first steps on RS-1979.
